The Lessons Learnt and Reconciliation Commission is to present its final report to the President on November 20. Over 1000 verbal evidence and 6000 written evidence were submitted to the Commission. The final report of the LLRC will be based on them and the observations as well as the recommendations made by the Commission itself, its spokesman Lakshman Wickramasinghe said.
President Mahinda Rajapaksa appointed the LLRC in May 2010 to probe the events in the period between 21st February 2002 to 19th May 2009 and report on the lessons to be learnt from those events and whether any person, group, or institution directly or indirectly bears responsibility for those events.
The LLRC held its first sittings on August 11, 2010. The mandate of the Commission was to expire on May 15, 2011. However, President Rajapaksa extended the mandate of the Commission by a period of six months in view of providing opportunity to compile a complete and a correct report.
