Sri Lanka 15th In Global Gender Gap Ranks

Sri Lanka ranked 15th in a World Economic Forum report on the gender gap present in 128 countries included in the report.

Sri Lanka ranked jointly first in terms of women’s health, 7th in political empowerment, 56th in educational attainment and 94th in terms of economic participation and opportunity.

The report placed Sri Lanka overall ahead of countries such as Australia, Canada, United States and France and behind Phillipines which had the strongest indicators among Asian countries.

President Proposes Budget Deficit Of 7% In 08

Update 3
President Mahinda Rajapaksa on Wednesday proposed a budget deficit of 7% of GDP for 2008, down from 7.2% of GDP expected this year.
Total government spending was estimated at Rs1,044 billion, up 21% from 2007. Total revenue was estimated at Rs750 billion, up 24% from 2007.

Highlights of proposals :

- Benefits for low-income groups & sectors including fishing, shipping, gem & jewellery, domestic textiles, farming.
- To continue cost of living allowance increase to public servants of Rs375 every 6 months.

- To grant 5-year tax holiday for investments over Rs50 mil in East which also have more than 50 employees.
- Charge an Environment Conservation Levy of Rs20 per household using vehicles, phone
