Prasanna Amarasekera of Track Masters and R.M.C.S. Rasanayaka of Air Force were adjudged the best men’s and best women’s athletes at the 88th National Athletic Championships concluded at the Mahinda Rajapaksa International Stadium on Sunday.
Both the athletes won the 400 meters events with defending champion Amarasekera winning narrowly. However Rasanayaka in an impressive run won by a comfortable margin.
Amarasekera clocked in a time of 47.02 seconds in mens 400 meters while Rasanayaka finished the race in 54.36 seconds in women’s 400 meters.

Two new Sri Lanka records were set on the first day of the 88th National Athletic Championship that began at the Mahinda Rajapaksa International Stadium, Diyagama on Friday, August 06.
S.G. Ranasinghe of the Air Force set a new record in the pole vault event for women.The other record was in the 3000 metres steeple chase event where W.T.E.K. Dulakshi also of the Air Force. She finished the distance in 11 minutes, 00.30 seconds. The previous best was 11 minutes 1.08 seconds set by Nimali-JNW
