World markets have entered a “new danger zone”, the president of the World Bank has warned. Robert Zoellick said investors had lost confidence in the economic leadership of several key countries.
Speaking at the Asia Society’s annual dinner in Sydney, he also said that the global economy was going through a “multi-speed recovery”.
Developing countries were now the source of growth and opportunity, Mr Zoellick said.
In the past two weeks, global stock markets have suffered massive falls on fears about the state of leading economies.
The US had its AAA debt rating cut for the first time in its history by the rating agency Standard & Poor’s, following a long and bitter row in Congress over a plan to raise the US debt ceiling to ensure the country avoided a default.
In Europe, rumours emerged that France would also have its top-notch rating downgraded, although this was widely denied, while Italy announced its second austerity plan in as many months.

A national plan on usage of water is to be developed after conducting a scientific study of water resources in the surface and underground, Minister of Irrigation and Water Resource Management Nimal Siripala De Silva said. A scientific study on water resources in the country has not been conducted so far. The objective of this initiative is to gain maximum benifits from the available water resources while preserving them, the Minister further disclosed.

(CBS) Can olive oil keep you from having a stroke? A provocative new study from France suggests that it might.
The study – published in the June 11 issue of the journal Neurology – suggests that the olive oil has a “protective role” against stroke – at least in older people. Researchers tracked more than 7,000 people age 65 or older living in three French cities and found that that individuals who ate lots of the oil were a whopping 41 percent less likely to have a stroke than those who never ate olive oil.
It’s not the first study to suggest health benefits for olive oil. Others have linked the stuff to reduced risk for heart disease, high blood pressure, and obesity, Reuters reported. And olive oil has been credited with extending the lives of heart attack patients and lowering their risk for recurrences.
But stroke?
“This is the first study to suggest that greater consumption of olive oil may lower risk of stroke in older subjects, independently of other beneficial foods found in the Mediterranean diet,” study author Dr. Cecilia Samieri, of the National Institute of Health and Medical Research in Bordeaux, told WebMD.
