A journalist for the Atlantic labeled Stacey Abrams and Beto O’Rourke as “superstar failures.”

The term “superstar losers” was coined by Atlantic staff writer Jacob Stern to mock Democrats Beto O’Rourke and Stacey Abrams for becoming well-known after losing races.

O’Rourke and Abrams, according to Stern, are “among the nation’s best-known political leaders, more recognized than almost any serving governor or U.S. senator,” but “have gotten so well known not by winning huge races but by losing them,” he added.

Both Democrats were referred to by the Atlantic writer as examples of a political phenomena he called the “superstar loser” phenomenon.

After ten years in the Georgia House of Representatives, Abrams gained notoriety in 2018 after a failed bid for governor. Before making unsuccessful bids for the Senate and subsequently the presidency, O’Rourke served three terms as a representative for Texas, he said. Abrams for governor of Georgia and O’Rourke for governor of Texas are both running again this year. They are possibly the two best representatives of the strange phenomena known as the “superstar loser” in American politics.

He asserted that the popularity of the phenomena is partly due to the fact that social media enables people to maintain their status as influential public figures even after losing elections. No one can stop you from publishing, even after the campaign is over, he added.

He added that losing to a despised opponent from the opposition political party could still be considered a victory in and of itself.

These candidates and their supporters can then portray the defeats as moral wins, whether it’s because they do better than expected or because of the opposition they face. Sometimes, as with the supporters of Abrams, it entails presenting a loss as the result of an unfair system,’ he wrote. Other times, like for O’Rourke fans, that entails portraying an unexpectedly strong showing in a bad situation as an indication of things to come.

Political scientists informed me that this may be one reason why superstar loserdom has so far favored the Democratic party: Democrats are desperate to capitalize on several red states that have been going purple. Or maybe the gap is a result of the post-Trumpian era in which we live. Or possibly something completely different.

He claimed that one Republican candidate who appeared to be a good match for O’Rourke and Abrams actually has a better chance of winning this year.

Republicans’ alternatives to Abrams and O’Rourke could emerge from this election. However, John James, a conservative from Michigan who has attempted two unsuccessful Senate runs and was the one that modern Republican superstar loser political scientists described to me, appears to be in a strong position to win his congressional election this year,’ he wrote.
