According to Reuters, Korean Air has suspended flights to Taiwan through Saturday, while Asiana Airlines has canceled flights through Friday, after which it will assess whether more cancellations are necessary.

Following House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s visit to the autonomous island, China is conducting live-fire military drills close to Taiwan. Since Speaker Newt Gingrich’s trip there in 1997, Pelosi is the highest-ranking American official to have gone there.

Her visit angered Chinese authorities, who claimed it violated the one-China policy, which declares that the United States recognizes but does not support China’s claim of sovereignty over the island. Additionally, it declares that formal diplomatic connections between the United States and the Taiwanese government would end.

The administration of President Joe Biden tried to disassociate itself from claims that it had attempted to discourage Pelosi from the visit on Thursday, but the White House had encouraged her to abandon the trip.

John Kirby, a spokesperson for the National Security Council, joined Bill Hemmer on Thursday’s episode of America’s Newsroom. He was questioned by Hemmer on Pelosi’s communications with the White House before the trip.

“Do you agree that the White House made an effort to convince her otherwise? That was fairly clear “Hemmer enquired.

Kirby replied, “I wouldn’t concede with that. “I believe we provided her with context and details. Not just for this one stop, but for every stop she makes on her significant trip, we offered her an analysis of what it would look like.”
