Russian court issues verdict and sentence in WNBA player Brittney Griner’s case.

NEW Fox News articles can now be heard on audio! A Russian judge on Thursday found WNBA player Brittney Griner guilty of narcotics possession and drug smuggling and sentenced her to nine years in jail.

She also received a 1 million ruble fine.

Griner was asked to serve 9.5 years in jail by Russian authorities. The defense then launched their justifications. Griner could spend up to 10 years behind bars.

Before the sentence was handed down, Griner apologized.

She said, “I want to apologize to my teammates, my club, my supporters, and the city of (Yekaterinburg) for the error I committed and the shame I caused on them. I also want to express my regrets to my parents, my brothers, the Phoenix Mercury organization from my native country, the fantastic WNBA players, and my wonderful spouse.

Hope it doesn’t terminate my life in your ruling, she added.
