Paige Bueckers, the AP Women’s Player of the Year for 2020–21, tore her anterior cruciate ligament (ACL), according to the University of Connecticut, and will not participate in the upcoming season.
The school claims that Bueckers suffered a left knee injury during a pickup basketball game on Monday night.
Coach Geno Auriemma sent a comment to Connecticut Public via email. “Paige is obviously a fantastic basketball player, but she’s a better person and teammate, and it’s just sad that this has happened to her,” he said. Although we will miss her on the court, she will still do everything in her power to guide and support her colleagues this year.
A superstar both on and off the court, Bueckers. She is the first collegiate athlete that Gatorade has ever supported. She scored 15 points per game in the NCAA Tournament last year, helping her team reach the national title game.
Despite missing 19 games due to a leg fracture, Bueckers led the club in points scored per game for the whole season.
According to the school, I will have surgery to repair the ligament on Friday.
After the announcement, Bueckers wrote on Instagram, “She’ll have one heck of a comeback.”
