During their meal at a restaurant in China, a customer unintentionally found dinosaur footprints dating back more than 100 million years.

In the Chinese province of Sichuan, a patron at a restaurant found two dinosaur footprints. The footprints belonged to Cretaceous-era sauropods. Paleontologists found that the footprints belonged to two dinosaurs that inhabited the Sichuan province.

Paleontologist Lida Xing, an associate professor at the China University of Geosciences, told CNN that sauropods, which are distinguished by their long necks and tails, left their imprints. The largest animals on Earth were sauopods.

“Sauropod tracks are not uncommon in the Sichuan Basin, but they are quite uncommon to find in downtown eateries,” Xing said in an email to the Post. “Cement or plants cover the city’s ground the majority of the time.”

According to Xing, these sauropods were active on Earth during the Cretaceous era. Even though finding dinosaur footprints in the province is common, she claimed that it is difficult to come across footprints from the Cretaceous period, when “dinosaurs really flourished.”

According to Xing’s estimation, the two footprints most likely belonged to sauropods that were 26 feet long, as reported by CNN.

The restaurant where the footprints were discovered only recently opened, according to CNN. Layers of earth from when the location was a chicken farm helped keep the footprints from eroding.

In order to prevent guests from stepping on the footprints, the restaurant owner, according to Xing, erected a fence around them. He might even construct a shed to keep them even better.

This find genuinely fills in a piece of the Cretaceous period and the diversity of dinosaurs in Sichuan, according to Xing.
